There are around 60 nature reserves in China to save the giant panda’s living habitat.

Giant pandas live in large bamboo forests on moist and fairly high mountains — about 1,200 – 3,100 meters (4,000 – 10,000 feet) further sea level.

Presently, about 1,600 giant pandas live in over 20,000 square kilometers of habitat.

Giant Pandas’ Habitat Are Shrinking

The giant panda’s habitat earlier extended across central, southern, and eastern China, and China’s bordering countries of Myanmar and northern Vietnam.

But it has been dramatically decreased by the growth in people’s logging and agriculture practices.

Now the species is bounded to only about 20 isolated patches in western China’s Gansu, Sichuan, Gansu, Shaanxi Regions.

The Main Areas of Giant Panda Habitat

Wild Giant Pandas are mostly distributed in the Min Mountains (岷山) in Sichuan and Gansu provinces as well as the Qin Mountains (or Qinling 秦岭) in Shaanxi Province.

The Min Mountains

The Qin Mountains (秦岭 Qínlǐng) are the part of China’s most significant watershed, that provides a natural wall between the North and South of the land. They are residence to 270 Qinling pandas, a sub-species of the giant panda.

Foping and Changqing nature reserves have been appointed there to protect them and other rare species.

Foping Nature Reserve is humid all year round, which is appropriate for the pandas, and 55% of the woodland is bamboo. It is the giant pandas’ favorite food.

Multiple pandas live in this 350 km2 (140 mi2) reserve, around one for an area of 2.5 kilometers. Reaching across a panda there is quite possible. The reserve is locked to visitors at the time of writing.

Over 60 Nature Reserves

There are around 60 nature reserves, protecting over 10,000 square kilometers that are around 4,000 square miles, to secure this endangered species. Wolong (130 kilometers, 80 mi, from Chengdu) and Foping are the two main giant panda protection reserves.

Connecting Isolated Habitats by Planting Bamboo Forest

The bamboo forest has been grown in the zones between some remote patches of giant panda habitat to connect them. Currently, giant pandas have a chance to emigrate if food is lacking in their area. Reforestation to expand current habitats also supports creating a more immense and less stressful atmosphere for the pandas.
